The Chief Ranger of the Visitor and Resource Protection division at Dinosaur National Monument serves as the senior law enforcement official with responsibilities for planning and executing the park's law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical services, cultural and natural resource protection, employee and public safety, and structure fire management programs. The position works collaboratively with four other division chiefs and the superintendent to provide direction and oversight for all aspects of park management. The visitor and resource protection division is a complex and multifaceted operation that manages the monument's diverse mix of high mountainous desert, world-class whitewater boating and incredible geological, archeological and paleontological resources that attract over 330,000 visitors annually. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
Plans, develops, coordinates and directs law enforcement activities relative to various criminal activities such as illegal hunting, UTV encroachment, paleontological and archeological site disturbance, etc. Performs short- and long term management planning including budget formulation and execution and setting division goals and priorities. Supervise and manage protection programs and VRP employees in a complex multi-jurisdictional land ownership setting. Plans, directs, and manages through others, complex programs such as Concessions Management, Volunteer in Parks, Special Park Use. Develops partnerships with cooperators, non-profit organizations, other law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and others. Serves as a member of the Park's leadership team. Interacts with a variety of partner and interest groups, communities and the media in support of park management priorities or initiatives. Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment. The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components:
1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type II (seasonal) or higher National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission, or equivalent, 10/28/2020. More information can be found in the 'Education' section of this job announcement. Must have a current, valid State Driver's License 10/28/2020. This position is designated as a secondary administrative law enforcement position. Prior law enforcement experience, as gained by substantial service in a primary law enforcement officer position or equivalent experience outside the Federal government is a mandatory prerequisite for incumbents of this position. - AND - GS-12 Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
